THE CHARLES D. SMITH AWARD
Established in 2015, the Charles D. Smith Award recognizes individuals who demonstrate passionate volunteerism, strong community leadership, and a lifelong commitment to serving others.
For more than 45 years, Charlie built a living legacy of civic service as an educator, mentor, leader, and community advocate. His life is a testament to the incredible impact that dedicated volunteers have every day. As an avid supporter of Big Brothers Big Sisters and the youth of Kosciusko County, Charlie helped increase the number of children served by 100%. His altruism and strong leadership endowed the agency with invaluable resources, making Big Brothers Big Sisters one of the leading mentoring organizations in the Midwest. His down-to-earth nature and contagious smile brought warmth and light to the countless organizations and individuals he served, and his presence is truly missed.
Charlie’s unwavering dedication to family, faith, and community earned him a place among Northeast Indiana’s most honored citizens and set an inspiring standard for volunteerism. Big Brothers Big Sisters proudly celebrates his legacy through the Charles D. Smith Award. Past recipients include Ernie Wiggins (2017), The K21 Health Foundation (2018), Maple Leaf Farms and the Tucker Family (2019), Terry & Sherri Milton (2021), Art Gakstatter (2022), Bill & Vicki Morton (2023), and Esther N. Pfleiderer (2024).
A BENEFIT FOR THE CHILDREN OF KOSCIUSKO COUNTY
This event helps to raise awareness of Big Brothers Big Sisters programs, recruit volunteers to mentor children, and provide funding to expand the existing programs—all for Kosciusko County!
